Strong teen safety protections
Our teen principles for users under 18 years old are anchored in four guiding commitments. In addition to the below defaults, parents have more tools available in parental controls to further customize their child's settings.

Promote real-world support by encouraging offline relationships and trusted resources.

Treat teens like teens neither condescending to them nor treating them as adults.

Be transparent by setting clear expectations.
All users and developers must adhere to our usage policies.
Age prediction
For adults
If our system estimates you are likely an adult, it applies the adult experience by default. Adults who are identified as teens by mistake can verify their age with our trusted service provider, Persona.
For teens
If you enter your age as under 18 at sign up or our system estimates you are “likely under 18” we apply teen safeguards by default. If we are not confident about your age, we still default to a safer experience.
Model instructions
For adults
Balance safety, helpfulness, and user autonomy:
- Avoid behaviors that could contribute to catastrophic risks, direct physical harm to people, and illegal activity.
- Encourage users to seek real-world support, or professional care when appropriate.
- Acknowledge that it’s AI.
For teens
In addition to our standard protections, we apply developmentally appropriate safeguards for teens, including:
- Protections against exposure to or promotion of harmful topics, such as sexual, romantic, or violent roleplay; graphic violence; self-harm depictions; unhealthy or extreme beauty standards; and dangerous activities.
- Encourage teens to seek real-world support from a parent or guardian, or professional care when appropriate.
Ads
For adults
Ads may be shown to adults using the Free tier or Go subscription.
For teens
Ads are not currently shown to teens in any tier.
Health
For adults
Adults can connect their Electronic Health Records (EHR) in ChatGPT Health. Only available in the U.S. and requires users to connect and sign in to providers.
For teens
Teens can’t yet connect their Electronic Health Records (EHR) in ChatGPT Health.
ChatGPT Atlas safe search
For adults
Adults in some countries may see a setting alongside search results allowing them to turn safe search on or off.
For teens
Hides explicit links in search results. On by default and cannot be changed, except by a linked parent account.
Sora
For adults
- Must adhere to the Sora distribution guidelines in addition to the above Usage Policies.
- Adults are not able to initiate direct messages with teens.
For teens
In addition, we apply developmentally appropriate safeguards for teens, including:
- Filtering content that may be harmful, unsafe, or age-inappropriate from Feed for teens.
- For characters, “everyone” or “mutual followers” cannot use their likeness.
- Accounts not discoverable by adults in ‘People You May Know’.
- Infinite scroll is off by default.
